Book Club Adventure: The Not-So-Tiny Tales of Simon Seahorse

Dive into an underwater world of imagination and adventure with the first four books in The Not-So-Tiny Tales of Simon Seahorse series by Cora Reef.

Simon may be a tiny seahorse, but he has a not-so-tiny personality and a huge imagination. Living in Coral Grove, Simon loves telling stories that make everyday ocean life feel like a grand adventure. But when real problems pop up like a missing lucky pearl, an unexpected shark encounter, or a tricky team competition Simon and his friends must face the challenge together.

Each story combines humor, friendship, and imaginative storytelling as Simon learns that even the smallest sea creature can have big adventures. This series runs on a great kid-psychology engine:
Simon exaggerates stories. Kids immediately get that because they do the same thing when telling stories about their day. The author literally says Simon prefers to “embellish” stories rather than lie.

“Simon has lived near Coral Grove, a small village near the ocean, his whole life, but from the stories he tells, you’d think he’s traveled the seas! It’s not that Simon lies. He prefers the term “embellishes,” and his way of seeing the world makes the everyday extraordinary. So when his lucky pearl goes missing after he brings it to school one day, Simon’s journey to find it is sure to be an epic tale!” Simon & Schuster

Get ready to explore the ocean, meet unforgettable sea creatures, and discover that even tiny voices can tell epic tales.

Each meeting will include Trivia game, Vocabulary game, and live craft and chat inspired by the destinations in the story.  The session wraps with my legendary Book Club Face-Off, a Jeopardy-style trivia finale and group reflection that pulls all four stories together.

Our 4 Week Reading List:

Levels:

  • Lexile series range: 550-650
  • Pinnell N-P
  • ATOS 3.6-4.2

Many parents wonder: Why use scissors and glue in a literacy club? The answer is in the neuroscience of reading. Reading is a high-level physical skill that requires precise eye-tracking and coordination. My 15-minute “Book Chat & Craft” part of the sessions are strategically designed to build the physical foundation for fluency.

👁️ Eye-Tracking & Line Retention

      • The Science: Crafting involves “fine-motor tracking”, following a line with scissors or threading a needle. This is the exact same neurological pathway the eyes use to follow a line of text without skipping or jumping.
      • The Result: By practicing precision with their hands, students are subconsciously training their eyes to stay locked on a page, reducing the “skipping” that leads to poor comprehension.

🧠 Kinetic Memory (The “Cognitive Anchor”)

      • The Science: Moving the hands while discussing complex themes (like conflict or empathy) helps “anchor” abstract concepts into long-term memory.
      • The Result: Your child isn’t just listening; they are physically processing the story. Studies show that tactile engagement leads to 40% higher retention of the discussion.

🧩 Narrative Sequencing (The Storyboard)

      • The Science: Crafting requires a step-by-step process: Beginning, Middle, and End. This perfectly mirrors the “Cause and Effect” structure of a book’s plot.
      • The Result: Following craft instructions strengthens the logical mapping needed for high-level reading comprehension and essay planning.

🛡️ Lowering the “Reading Anxiety” Wall

    • The Science: A quick “win” (completing a small project) releases dopamine and lowers the “affective filter” (stress).
    • The Result: When the hands are busy, the “pressure” to be right disappears. Shy or reluctant readers speak up more confidently because their brain is in a relaxed, creative state.

I turn a sedentary reading task into a multi-sensory academic workout.

In my clubs, we don’t just “talk about books.” We use specific, high-engagement games to build the Chain of Thinking your child needs for advanced academics.

🔍 Call My Bluff: The Detective’s Dictionary

      • The Skill: Vocabulary & Critical Thinking.
      • The Game: Students hunt for the one real definition among clever fakes.
      • The Result: They master the dictionary and learn to spot “false leads,” a vital skill for independent research.

🗣️ Whose Line Is It?: The Evidence Hunter

      • The Skill: Textual Analysis & Memory.
      • The Game: Students match iconic quotes to the correct character.
      • The Result: They stop “guessing” and start locating proof, practicing the exact citation skills required in middle school.

🕵️‍♂️ Mystery Word: The Synonym Challenge

      • The Skill: Descriptive Prowess & Precision.
      • The Game: Describing a key word from the text without saying it, using their own words to describe it and only one synonym and one antonym.
      • The Result: This expands their vocabulary bank, moving them from “simple” sentences to sophisticated writing.

✍️ Six Words: The Character Architect

    • The Skill: Concise Storytelling & Synthesis.
    • The Game: Distilling an entire character’s essence into exactly six powerful words.
    • The Result: They learn to cut the “fluff” and focus on core themes, preparing them for high-level essay writing.

I don’t just teach reading; I level up with your child.

From the “Littles” to the “Teens,” my  platform and tools evolve to meet your student’s changing brain. We trade passive scrolling for high-stakes interactivity and student-led creative control.

🌱 Grades PreK–2: The Interactive Dashboard

      • The Experience: A fully interactive game whiteboard filled with sound effects and “magic” movements all controlled by your child.
      • The Reward: Students earn digital gems for correct answers, physically dragging them into their Virtual Treasure Chest.
      • The Goal: Building “Screen Confidence” and fine motor tracking while making phonics and early literacy feel like a win.

🎮 Grades 3–6: The 3D Adventure (KoalaGo)

      • The Experience: A Minecraft-style 3D world where students move their own avatars around my treasure chest filled island beach. Includes immersive soundscapes (like the beach) and instant feedback buzzers.
      • The Reward: Winnings are collected in a 3D Treasure Chest within their own customizable “Treasure House.”
      • The Goal: Eliminating “Zoom Fatigue” by giving students a physical sense of space and autonomy while they tackle complex chapter books.

🎓 Teens: The Creative Studio

    • The Experience: Students take the lead! They move away from “game boards” and into professional tools like Google Docs and Canva.
    • The Reward: Total customization. (One group even chose the “Taco Bell Bell” as their official correct-answer sound!)
    • The Goal: Mastering the “Modern Literacy” skills, collaborative editing, graphic design, and persuasive pitching, needed for college and the professional world.

Everything you need to know to get started.

The Logistics

  • Who is this club for?
It’s perfect for children ages 6–8 who love mysteries, humor, and are ready to dive into chapter books.
  • How do we attend the sessions?
We meet live via KoalaGo. To keep the environment safe and interactive, cameras are required.
  • Do you provide the books?
No, but they are easy to find! You can grab them at your local library, favorite bookstore, or via Kindle Unlimited https://amzn.to/42fVhAl..
  • Is this a monthly membership?
No. Each series-based club is a standalone purchase, typically running for 4 to 8 weeks. No recurring surprise fees!
  • What if we miss a session?
Since we do not record live sessions for privacy, missed sessions cannot be “made up.” However, I will always send the week’s craft template so your child can still complete the activity at home.

The Learning Experience

  • What is the reading expectation?
Students should read one book per week with a caregiver before our live session so they are ready.
  • How does this help struggling readers?
There is no forced reading aloud in class. We build confidence through games and discussion, removing the “performance anxiety” that often stops struggling readers from enjoying books.
  • Is it challenging enough for advanced readers?
Yes! My “Chain of Thinking” games (like Mystery Word and Trivia) challenge advanced readers to analyze deeper themes and vocabulary, preventing them from “coasting” on surface-level plots.
  • What supplies do we need?
Just the basics: scissors, a glue stick, and the weekly printouts I provide.

The Technology & Support

  • What is KoalaGo, and is it hard to use?
KoalaGo is a browser-based 3D platform that is accessible internationally (including China). There is no software to download. I will send a direct link before class, your child just clicks and enters the world!
  • Do you offer a sibling discount?
If siblings are sharing a screen and the same book, please reach out to Miss Kyria for a custom discount code.
  • What makes this club unique?
I combine vibrant storytelling with tactile brain-training (crafts) and evidence-based games. It’s the only club that builds the physical and cognitive skills needed for middle school success while feeling like a 3D adventure.
