Young Reviewers League: Ignite Your Child’s Passion for Writing!

The Young Reviewers League is an exciting drop-in writing class designed for kids ages 8 to 12. Our program makes writing fun and engaging by focusing on topics that children are familiar with and enjoy. We explore a different theme, such as toys, movies, video games, fast food, books, and more. By writing reviews on these topics, kids get to express their opinions and share their thoughts on things they love.

Why This Class is Helpful and Fun

Familiar Topics:

Writing about things kids know and enjoy makes the process more relatable and enjoyable.. When children write about familiar subjects like their favorite toys, movies, or video games, they feel more connected to the task (it has an understandable reason). This familiarity helps them feel more confident and enthusiastic about writing. They are more likely to engage deeply with the material, which can lead to a more positive attitude towards writing in general. By focusing on topics they love, we tap into their natural interests and make learning a joyful experience.

Creative Expression:

Kids get to creatively express their likes and dislikes, enhancing their ability to articulate their thoughts. They discover that sometimes their answers aren’t just correct or incorrect. This not only boosts their writing skills but also their overall communication abilities. In our class, children are encouraged to use their imagination and personal voice to describe and evaluate the subjects they review. This creative freedom allows them to explore different styles of writing and find their unique voice. As they share their opinions and preferences, they learn to communicate more effectively and confidently, which is a valuable skill both in and out of the classroom.

Skill Development:

Practicing writing regularly helps improve their writing skills, vocabulary, and grammar. Our class provides a structured yet fun environment for kids to hone these essential skills. Each session is designed to challenge students while keeping them engaged through interactive activities and discussions. By writing reviews on a variety of topics, children expand their vocabulary and learn to construct well-organized, coherent pieces of writing. The consistent practice also helps them develop better grammar and punctuation skills, which are crucial for academic success.

Formulating Opinions:

Writing reviews encourages kids to think critically and form their own opinions, which is an important life skill. They learn to analyze, evaluate, and express their thoughts clearly and convincingly. In our class, children are taught to look beyond the surface and consider different aspects of the subjects they review. This critical thinking process helps them develop a more nuanced understanding of the world around them. By articulating their opinions and backing them up with reasons, they become more confident in their ability to express themselves and engage in thoughtful discussions.

Sharing and Discussion:

Sharing their reviews with peers fosters a sense of community and allows them to see different perspectives. This collaborative environment helps them appreciate diverse viewpoints and enhances their social skills. During class, students have the opportunity to present their reviews and listen to others. This exchange of ideas promotes a respectful and supportive atmosphere where children learn to value and consider different opinions. It also helps them develop important social skills such as active listening, empathy, and constructive feedback. By participating in these discussions, they build a sense of camaraderie and teamwork that enriches their learning experience.

By participating in the Young Reviewers League, children will not only have fun but also develop essential writing and critical thinking skills that will benefit them in their academic journey and beyond.

8. What happens during a typical class?
Each class follows an engaging structure:

  • Introduction of the theme (e.g., toys, video games, books).
  • Discussion of the key elements of a good review (what makes a toy fun? How do you judge a movie?).
  • Writing time: Kids write their reviews based on the day’s theme.
  • Sharing and discussion: Participants share their reviews with the group, listen to others, and offer feedback in a supportive environment.

9. Will my child have to share their work?
Sharing is encouraged but not mandatory. We aim to create a comfortable and supportive environment where kids feel safe sharing their opinions. For those who may be shy, listening to others can also be a valuable learning experience. Over time, many children find confidence in sharing their work as they see that everyone’s voice is valued.

10. What materials does my child need to participate?
Your child only needs basic writing supplies, such as:

  • Paper or a notebook
  • Pencils or pens
  • Each session takes place online, so your child can join from the comfort of home.

If your child prefers typing, they can use a tablet or computer to write their reviews. I keep things simple so kids can focus on writing and sharing their thoughts.

11. How often is the Young Reviewers League held?
The class is a monthly drop-in program, meaning your child can join whenever it fits into their schedule.
