A Bark-tastic New Book Club Program for Young Readers!

Looking to unleash your child’s love for reading? My upcoming 5-week Dog Diaries Book Club Series is the paw-fect way to get young readers howling with excitement! Designed to immerse kids in literature through tail-wagging games, creative crafts, and drool-worthy discussions, this club brings James Patterson’s hilarious Dog Diaries series to life. Over five weeks, participants will dive into four fur-bulous books, tackle trivia challenges, play interactive games, and craft a pawsitively awesome project led by Miss Kyria live in class. The grand finale? A Week 5 debate that’ll have everyone barking their opinions about all four books!

How the Program Works:

  • Weeks 1-4: Each week, members will read a different Dog Diaries book, gear up for fun activities like trivia and a second interactive game, and gather supplies for a hands-on craft segment.
    • Week 1: Dog Diaries: A Middle School Story
    • Week 2: Dog Diaries: Happy Howlidays
    • Week 3: Dog Diaries: Mission Impawsible
    • Week 4: Dog Diaries: Curse of the Mystery Mutt
  • Week 5: A grand finale debate covering all four books, plus two tail-wagging, series-based games to wrap up the adventure!

Interactive Games to Boost Comprehension and Canine Creativity:

Trivia: 3 Questions with a Bone-us Backup
This game sharpens memory and comprehension by challenging readers to sniff out key details about Junior, the lovable mutt narrator, his wild adventures, and the messes he digs into.
  • Objective: Encourage close reading, boost recall, and sharpen citation skills.
  • Educational Benefits: Builds memory, hones analytical thinking, and strengthens writing skills with a playful twist.
A Second Weekly Game – Learning Through Fetch-tastic Play!
Each week, kids will romp through an additional game designed to reinforce the book’s themes and vocabulary—perfect for young pups who love a good challenge! Examples include:
  •  Call My Bluff: 3 Words/Definitions – One’s a Fake! A vocab game where players sniff out the real meaning among sneaky fakes, boosting critical thinking and dictionary skills.
  • Whose Bark Is It?: Match quotes to characters (or dogs!), deepening their bond with Junior and his pack.
  • Mystery Bone: A word-guessing game with synonyms, antonyms, and descriptions to expand their word kennel.
Other Pawsome Games:
  • Six Barks: Sum up Junior’s doggy antics in six words, sharpening descriptive skills.
  • Fetch My Verb: Act out action words from the book—think “dig,” “chew,” or “bark”—to master verbs.
  • Word Hound Relay: Build vocab and whip up creative sentences in a fast-paced race.
  • Dog Tag Interview: Role-play as Junior or his pals and guess who’s who with fun Q&A.
  • Puppy Soundtrack: Create sound effects (woofs, growls, and slurps!) for Junior’s wildest scenes.
Week 5: The Great Dog Debate!
To cap off our canine caper, participants will unleash their inner debate hounds in a lively showdown about the Dog Diaries series. Debate questions will drop in ClassDojo six days before the final session, giving kids time to chew over their thoughts. The classic starter? “Which Dog Diaries book is the top dog?” Kids will defend their fave with evidence from the text—think Junior’s funniest mess or wildest adventure—practicing critical thinking, persuasive barking, and respectful listening.
  • Additional topics might dig into Junior’s best scheme, silliest holiday fiasco, or whether he’s a hero or a troublemaker, sparking deeper story exploration and a howling good time!
Week 5: The Ultimate Puppy Playoff!
The final week fetches two special games for the whole series:
  • Doggy Links: Kids sniff out and share passages showing Junior’s wildest traits, boosting comprehension and speaking skills.
  • Bark-Off Trivia: A game-show-style trivia romp through all four books, with surprises like “Double Treats” and a high-stakes final round—think Jeopardy meets a dog park!

Dog Diaries Series: A Howling Good Time!

Get ready to roll over laughing with Junior, the scruffiest, funniest pup in the pack, in James Patterson’s Dog Diaries series! Junior’s no ordinary mutt—he’s a middle-school dog with a nose for trouble and a tail that won’t quit wagging. From digging up chaos in A Middle School Story to sniffing out holiday hijinks in Happy Howlidays, cracking impossible missions in Mission Impawsible, and facing a spooky mutt mystery in Curse of the Mystery Mutt, Junior’s tales are packed with slobber, silliness, and heart.
  • Armed with his trusty “human-to-dog” observations and a knack for chew-tastic disasters, Junior narrates his way through life with his pack—including his clueless humans and a few furry sidekicks. Will he save the day or just bury it in the backyard? Dig in to find out!

Language and Vocabulary

The Dog Diaries series serves up a drool-worthy mix of words like “mischief,” “romp,” “slobber,” “scheme,” and “mutt” that’ll challenge and delight young readers. Perfect for:
  • Reluctant 4th or 5th graders: Junior’s goofy antics make vocab-building a treat.
  • Advanced 2nd graders: A fun stretch for sharp pups reading ahead.
  • On-level 3rd graders: Just right for growing their word pack in a hilarious context.
With doggy puns and Junior’s laugh-out-loud voice, this series is a must for kids who love a good romp and a bit of furry mischief!

Why Crafts Are Crucial for Development

Crafting in our book club isn’t just about making a mess (though Junior would approve!). It’s a paws-on way to boost learning and growth:
  • Improves Coordination: Cutting out dog ears or gluing a tail sharpens hand-eye skills for writing and reading fluency.
  • Boosts Creativity: Kids craft Junior’s world—think chew-toy models or mystery mutt masks—sparking imagination and story connection.
  • Develops Sequencing: Following craft steps mirrors Junior’s chaotic tales, teaching plot order and cause-and-effect.
  • Increases Attention Spans: Focusing on a dog-bone craft builds stamina for discussions and reading.
  • Enhances Social Skills: Chatting about Junior’s antics over crafts builds teamwork and empathy.
  • Reinforces Educational Concepts: Crafts like a holiday doghouse tie into book themes for hands-on learning.
  • Promotes Emotional Literacy: Making Junior’s messes in art form helps kids process his wild emotions.
  • Builds Confidence: Finishing a craft boosts pride, encouraging bolder debate and discussion skills because we chat while we craft.

Turn reading into a multi-sensory romp with crafts that make literature a howling good time!
