Description

The Exploring the Magic of Writing: A Workshop with Magic Tree House as Mentor Texts is a 4-week program designed for students in grades 2-4 who love to read and write. This program is inspired by the popular book series, Magic Tree House, and uses the books as mentor texts to guide young writers in crafting their own stories.

Over the course of four weeks, students will explore various aspects of writing, including character development, setting, plot, and resolution. Each week, students will read a section of the book “Stage Fright on a Summer Night” and use it as inspiration to complete writing exercises and assignments. Through this process, students will learn how to apply the techniques and strategies used by successful authors to their own writing.

At the end of the program, students will have completed a final writing project that demonstrates their understanding and mastery of the writing concepts covered throughout the workshop. This program provides a fun and engaging way for students to improve their writing skills and develop a love for reading and storytelling.

Learning to use mentor texts, like the Magic Tree House series, provides immense value for young writers. By studying and emulating the techniques of accomplished authors, children gain a clear understanding of how to craft compelling stories. Mentor texts offer concrete examples of character development, plot structure, and descriptive language, helping students see these elements in action. This hands-on approach not only enhances their writing skills but also inspires creativity and boosts their confidence as they discover that they, too, can create engaging and imaginative stories.

Week 1: Introduction and Brainstorming

In the first week, students will be introduced to the concept of a mystery story and review the key elements of a story. Students will also read and discuss “Stage Fright on a Summer Night” to identify the main characters, setting, and plot. Students will brainstorm ideas for their own mystery story, using the book and their imagination as inspiration.

Week 2: Developing Characters and Plot

In the second week, students will focus on developing their characters and plot. Students will learn about the importance of creating well-rounded characters and explore different plot structures. Students will also work on drafting their story outlines.

Week 3: Writing and Revising

In the third week, students will focus on writing and revising their stories. Students will receive feedback from their peers and teacher, and will work on improving their stories based on that feedback. Students will also work on editing and revising their stories for spelling, grammar, and clarity.

Week 4: Illustrating and Formatting

In the fourth week, students will focus on illustrating and formatting their stories. Students will learn about the importance of including visual elements in their stories and explore different ways to format their work. Students will also work on creating a cover page and title for their story.
